The Tower of Babel

The account of the Tower of Babel helps us understand the devastating effects of sin. Even after God had destroyed all life on earth through the flood and graciously saved Noah's family and the animals, it wasn’t long before people disobeyed God again.

God instructed Noah to spread out and fill the earth. Instead, people decided it best to settle. Rather than bringing glory to God by following God’s plan, people decided to glorify themselves. They built a tower to make a name for themselves.

God’s plan to populate the earth following the flood could not be sidetracked. When God confused the languages of the people, they were forced to move away from one another and into people groups and nations bound by single languages. Eventually one of these nations would become God’s chosen people. Through the nation of Israel, Christ would come to save the world.

It is another exciting week of The Gospel Project for Kids! God’s gospel narrative continues this week as preschoolers will learn that God is serious about sin. People were sinning so much that God sent a flood to completely destroy all life on earth … all life, that is, except for one man, his family, and a boatload of animals.

Noah was a righteous man and God was gracious to him. God gave specific instructions on how Noah was to build an ark that would be used to rescue Noah, his family, and the animals. Noah was obedient to all God commanded.

As the account of Noah unfolds, we see a picture of Jesus. Sin caused separation between God and man, but God graciously provided a way of salvation for Noah and his family through the ark. Our sin separates us from a holy God, but God provides a way of salvation in the person of Jesus. Also, as Noah’s obedience and God’s grace saved Noah’s family and the animals, Jesus’ perfect obedience to God’s plan provides the way of salvation for us. When we acknowledge and trust God’s provision for us through Jesus, we are saved from the punishment our sin deserves.

Sin Entered the World

As we begin to unwrap the big picture of God’s story through the pages of His Word, it is important to grasp a full understanding of how sin entered the world. God’s story starts in the glorious perfection of creation but soon is marred by personal and tragic sin.

Sin is defined as breaking God’s law, and sin separates people from God. When Adam and Eve chose to break the one rule God had given them, sin entered not only their lives, but the lives of all mankind. When Adam and Eve sinned, they failed to give God the glory He deserved.

In God’s glorious way, He chose not to leave Adam, Eve, and all of humanity without hope. God sent His Son, Jesus, to live as Adam didn’t—perfectly sinless. Jesus was God in the form of a man, sent to rescue people from their sin.

Who made everything? God made everything.

We are so excited about our curriculum, The Gospel Project® for Kids! This Sunday begins a three-year chronological study of Scripture. Each week’s study will build upon the previous week, and we can’t wait to help our preschoolers and their families discover the big picture of God’s story.

God’s story begins with creation. This Sunday we will learn what God made during the six days of creation—from light and stars to birds and people! Everything God made is good. Have you ever wondered why butterflies exist or why the sky explodes with vivid color when the sun sets? The Bible says that all things were created for Jesus (Colossians 1:16-17).

God created people with a purpose: to know, love and glorify Him. Colossians 1:15-22 reveals that Christ is ruler over all of God’s creation. All of creation was created by Christ, through Christ, and for Christ. It’s all about Jesus! Everything was created to give glory to God, but people choose not to give Him glory. The rest of the Bible reveals how Jesus would restore the relationship between God and man.

Thank you for continuing this journey of The Gospel Project^® for Kids. Today’s Bible account focuses on the last few chapters of the Book of Revelation. While he was a prisoner on the island of Patmos, the apostle John had an amazing vision of heaven. Jesus told John to write down everything he saw. John saw things that will happen when Jesus comes back to earth. Jesus—who entered Jerusalem humbly on a donkey—will come victoriously, riding on a white horse. His name will be on His robe and His thigh:

KING OF KINGS

AND LORD OF LORDS.

Satan and the evil ones will be defeated and thrown into the lake of fire. The Lord will be on His throne. Then out of heaven will come a new creation—a new heaven and a new earth. God will dwell with humanity. They will be His people, and He will be their God.

John described the beauty of the New City—the New Jerusalem. The streets will be pure gold, like clear glass. The foundations of the city wall will be adorned with precious stones. The city will not need the sun or the moon because God’s glory will illuminate it. There will be no darkness, and nothing evil will ever come into the city.

The promised return of Christ should fill believers with hope, strengthening them to persevere through the trials of this life and remain faithful to the Lord. When Christ returns, those who trust in Him will be with Him and enjoy Him forever. God will undo every bad thing caused by sin—no more death, no more pain, no more tears. Jesus is making all things new!

Christ’s return should also give believers a sense of urgency to share the gospel with the world. It is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes! (Romans 1:16) Jesus is coming soon. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
